Nature at its finest. No coasting only living or dying.

There is this one creek that we cross with a dam on it. The dam is made in sand so it leaks all the time. This year there isn't enough water in the system to keep the levels up and I noticed from one day to the next that the water level had dropped a few inches and there was air between the ice and water around the edges. That is bad because in a month or so the water will be feet below the ice not supporting it and ol' Rich will dump a machine down the hole when the ice collapses. So I take the pre-emptive caution of draining water now so the ice collapses now and there is no future danger. While I was doing this little pike floated out from under the ice and through the breach. Perfect mature pike this is as big as they get in the little creek. Already dead with the ice on the water for less than a week. Tough winter for some fish.

Yikes! We waited until the end of the day and crept out.

The roads were still crazy icy but we made it home.

Dang! Pen 28

I had saw the empty pen in the dark and wee hours of the morning so I waited until the next day to do the forensics and reset it.

Wow!

Is it any wonder that a 27 pound cat can walk on top of 3 feet of powder snow? The first picture is the bottom of a lynx paw. I'm always amazed that the pads show in their tracks at all with all that fur. The second picture shows my hand (that is a 2xl glove on it) in between the front paws of a good lynx. The left paw is the top and the right paw shows the bottom.

I did it! A 30 pound lynx!

OK, so it had just ate another lynx in a snare but he is still a husky cat. 30 pounds on the nose with a bulging belly, he is the cat sitting in my lap in the trophy shot.
